CNY 2010
Every year during the CNY period, my parents will always head overseas for a holiday. Usually they set off after the first day of the lunar calendar but this year was an exception. They left on the morning of 初一. No, they are not trying to 避年 (avoid celebrating CNY and therefore, save on all the ang baos and similar CNY expenditures). The reason this year was different was because my parents had to attend a wedding dinner on 初八, and therefore, in order to have a week's long of holiday (typically it is of this duration for a tour package), they had to depart on the first day. My mum prepared the necessary red packets the night before 初一 and arranged for me to deliver them to my cousins. With their absence, this also means the duty of taking care of the house lies on us three brothers. i know i'm going to regret saying this in the future but for now, in some way, i'm liking the household chores i have to do during this one week. With the exception to laundry which had to be hand-washed, everything else seems a tad enjoyable. i'm finding it this way because i feel like i'm contributing to the house in some way. Just a while back, as the sky turned dark, i rushed to the kitchen to bring in the laundry and i recalled my mum complaining about how the weather always seem to change so rapidly, from sunny to cloudy in a span of an hour or so. Now, i can totally relate to how she feels. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, i had to compromise on the cleanliness of the floor because i do not have the time to vacuum and mop everyday. But at least the floor has been vacuumed twice thus far. Last time it was vacuumed was two days ago and i can feel the floor a little dusty now. With the piling workload i have to clear during this mid-semester break, i can only do it once more this coming Saturday, just the day before my parents return, which is also the day my mum specially requested for us to clean up the house. Also, with my parents' absence, there is a lot more freedom on my lifestyle. What comes along as well is my dad's car for use without the need to seek permission. Of course, subject to availability since my elder brother is a driver in the house too. On ang bao collection, it was a little less than last year. But i do not really place emphasis on the value collected. i still prefer money well-earned through effort. It makes the spending more meaningful as i tie them in to the effort of how they arrive. Alright, the week's ending. Need to get back to clearing my work. Happy CNY to all :)
